The Emergency Survival Pack program began at Salem UCC in 1989. The packs are assembled annually the Friday after Thanksgiving and are donated to the Homeless Veterans Program through the VA Medical Center in Detroit.

Founded in 1999, Ruth Ellis Center (REC) has established a national reputation for quality and innovation in providing trauma-informed services for lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth and young adults. Salem Church collects and assembles hygiene and cleaning kits to be donated to the center. Salem also provides and serves dinner several times a year at its Drop-in Center.

Reaching out to the greater community is an ongoing mission at Salem Church.  A long-standing tradition has been to supply much needed food and household items to the Neighborhood House of Farmington Hills. Throughout the pandemic, Salem has carried on with this calling through its monthly food drives. We have even included crocheted winter hats made by our Prayer Shawl ministry members! And at harvest time, we include fresh produce from Salem’s Community Garden to the Neighborhood House pantry. We also assemble Christmas breakfast boxes and Easter baskets to be donated to the families that Neighborhood House serve.

As Oakland County’s only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, HAVEN provides shelter, counseling, advocacy, and educational programming to nearly 30,000 people annually. Each year Salem Church coordinates a mission project for the benefit of the residents of the Haven Shelter program. Past projects include donating outdoor toys for the children enrolled in their summer programs, toiletry kits for the residents, and monetary donations.
