Founded in 1999, Ruth Ellis Center (REC) has established a national reputation for quality and innovation in providing trauma-informed services for lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth, and young adults. Salem Church collects and assembles hygiene and cleaning kits to be donated to the center. Salem also provides and serves dinner several times a year at their Drop-in Center.
Every December Salem friends and members "Ring the Bells" for the Red Kettle Program! The Red Kettle Campaign, the oldest annual charitable fundraiser of its kind in the United States, helps raise money for those who need it most in communities nationwide – providing toys for kids, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry and countless social service programs year-round.
It has been a Salem tradition for many years to support the holiday basket program at Baldwin Center in Pontiac. Baldwin Center provides holiday baskets for more than 600 Pontiac families. The baskets not only provide a turkey and all the fixings for a complete holiday meal, it also contains enough food for the family for up to four weeks! Baldwin Center partners with North Oakland Holiday Clearinghouse to ensure that the families that are most in need receive the baskets.
Reaching out to the greater community is an ongoing mission at Salem Church. A long-standing tradition has been to supply much needed food and household items to the Neighborhood House of Farmington Hills. Throughout the pandemic, Salem has carried on with this calling through its monthly food drives. We have even included crocheted winter hats made by our Prayer Shawl ministry members! And at harvest time, we include fresh produce from Salem’s Community Garden to the Neighborhood House pantry. We also assemble Christmas breakfast boxes and Easter baskets to be donated to the families that Neighborhood House serve.
As Oakland County’s only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, HAVEN provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and educational programming to nearly 30,000 people a year. Each year Salem Church coordinates a mission project for the benefit of the residents of the Haven Shelter program. Past projects include donating outdoor toys for the children enrolled in their summer programs, toiletry kits for the residents, and monetary donations.
Salem has donated back packs and school supplies since 2014 to Farmington Public School for students in need. These students are able to start the school year with the supplies needed for a successful year! We also participate in FPS “Adopt a Family” Christmas program, purchasing gifts for two families during the Christmas season.
